There are a wide range of systems available for domestic use, below are some examples…
Split system: This is as simple as it gets. It consists of one indoor unit running off of one outdoor unit. Ideal for a single room such as conservatory, bedroom, living room etc

Multi split system: Ideal for an average sized house, one outdoor unit will feed anything up to five indoor units. Perfect if you fancy having full climate control of your bedrooms, living room, dining room.

VRF system: This type of system is normally suited to large properties. Numerous indoor units can be connected to a single outdoor unit.

Once you have a system type in mind, you then have to decide on the style of indoor units. In most cases these can be mix & matched (must be same manufacturer)
Here are just a few examples
Standard high wall mounted unit – Plain and simple, normally the cheapest option

Designer style wall mounted unit – These come in a variety of finishes such as mirror fronted or brushed metal, some with changeable front panels.

Floor mounted unit – fixes to the wall or floor at low level.

Concealed (invisible) ducted unit – These are a popular choice for the image conscious. They are designed to be installed in a loft or hidden high level. Flexible duct is then taken from the unit to small grilles in the ceiling of the room. This is generally a more expensive option but great if you prefer to keep everything out of sight.
Concealed floor mounted unit – as above but designed to be hidden within a cabinet or dressing table.
